Watchlist: How I Narrow the Field When There Are Too Many Stocks

Separating What’s Actionable Now, What’s Extended, and 10 Stocks to Watch

Watchlist: How I Narrow the Field When There Are Too Many Stocks

One of the biggest challenges for traders is deciding which names actually belong on a watchlist.

Many traders feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of stocks available. Others run into the opposite frustration, where the strongest names are extended or still building bases and price is not offering many low-risk entry points.

Sometimes, that is simply the reality of the market. In those periods, patience is part of the process.

This is where alerts matter. Setting alerts allows you to step away without missing important developments, whether that is a stock moving out of a base or an extended leader pulling back into a more favorable entry area.

When leadership is concentrated and many strong names are extended, it can feel overwhelming trying to decide where to focus. Most investors end up either chasing late entries or freezing altogether.

This watchlist is not a list of stocks to blindly buy.

It is a framework for how I narrow the field and organize opportunities into clear categories based on price action, relative strength, and fundamentals.

The goal is focus, not volume.

How I Break the Market Down

Rather than treating every strong stock the same, I separate leaders into a few distinct buckets.
Each bucket serves a different purpose.

Actionable Now

These are stocks offering defined risk and clean technical structures. They are either pulling back constructively or emerging from tight consolidations where risk can be clearly managed.

True Market Leaders That Are Extended

These are high-performing leaders that have already made significant moves. They are not buyable here, but they remain on the watchlist while I wait for pullbacks, tightening action, or new bases to form.

Strong Fundamentals, Still Building

These are stocks with solid CANSLIM characteristics that are forming bases or working through consolidations. They are not ready to buy yet, but they are worth monitoring as potential future leaders.

High Relative Strength, Not Classic CANSLIM

Some stocks may not check every traditional CANSLIM box but are showing strong relative strength and institutional interest. These names are watched closely to see if price action and fundamentals continue to improve.

Not every stock belongs in every bucket.
And most stocks belong in none.

A Reality Check Before the Watchlist

Before getting into individual names, it is important to acknowledge something I am hearing repeatedly, and it is valid.

Many prior leaders are extended and not offering favorable risk-to-reward entries. If you are not already in them, the correct action may simply be to watch.

Other names are choppy and stuck in consolidation ranges, similar to the broader indexes. These can break either way and often do not offer ideal conditions for aggressive positioning.

This is normal.

Markets move in phases. Sometimes there are many high-quality setups. Sometimes there are only a few. And sometimes there are none.

Learning to recognize which phase we are in is part of becoming consistent.

Now let’s move into specific watchlist names and charts.

CANSLIM – Actionable or Near Actionable

LITE – Lumentum Holdings

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • 99 Relative Strength
  • Accelerating institutional ownership
  • Leader within a top industry group
  • Aligned with the broader AI infrastructure theme

Technical overview

LITE is pulling back constructively after a strong prior advance and is currently holding support near the 50-day moving average.

A potential entry would be around $365, on a move above last week’s high, signaling a turn back up from support.

Risk management:
A logical stop is around $316, below last week’s low and a decisive break of the 50-day moving average.

This keeps risk clearly defined while allowing the stock room to work if the trend resumes.

AMD – Advanced Micro Devices

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • 94 Relative Strength
  • Accelerating institutional ownership since March 25
  • Leader within the semiconductor group
  • Aligned with the broader AI infrastructure theme

Technical overview

AMD is pulling back constructively after a strong prior advance and is now working back toward all-time highs.

Price recently found support just below the 50-day moving average near $194, followed by a strong rebound. This type of action suggests digestion rather than distribution.

On the daily chart, AMD has reclaimed key moving averages and is now consolidating beneath prior highs. On the weekly chart, the longer-term uptrend remains intact, with price consolidating after a powerful multi-month move.

Rather than chasing strength, the focus here is on structure and risk definition as the stock works through consolidation near highs.

Potential action area

AMD is currently working within a potential buy zone between $230 and $267, depending on entry style and confirmation.

More aggressive entries focus on continuation out of the current consolidation. More conservative entries wait for confirmation through prior highs.

Risk management

A logical risk level is below the recent support near $194, which aligns with the pullback low and the 50-day moving average.

For tighter risk approaches, the prior higher low near $199 may also serve as a reference, depending on position size and time frame.

A decisive break below these levels would invalidate the setup and move AMD back into a watch-only category.

VRT – Vertiv Holdings

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • Growing institutional ownership
  • 90 Relative Strength
  • Aligned with the broader AI and power demand theme

Technical overview

VRT has been consolidating after a strong prior advance and is now working higher toward all-time highs.

The pullback has not been ideal from a volatility standpoint. Volume expanded during parts of the pullback, and several of the down candles were larger than what you typically want to see in a clean, low-volatility digestion. That is a valid concern and something to respect.

Despite that volatility, price has continued to form higher lows, and the stock has held above key support levels. This suggests that while the pullback has been choppy, institutions have not abandoned the name.

On both the daily and weekly charts, VRT remains in an uptrend and is now tightening beneath prior highs.

Potential action area

A potential entry would come around $184, on continued strength through short-term resistance as price works back toward prior highs.

Risk management

A logical stop sits below the most recent higher low near $158. At $147 we would have a breakdown.

SEI – Solaris Energy Infrastructure

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • Accelerating institutional ownership
  • 95 Relative Strength
  • Exposure to power and infrastructure supporting AI and data center demand

Technical overview

SEI has been consolidating after a strong advance and is now pushing to new all-time highs.

The consolidation itself has not been ideal. Price action has been wide and somewhat loose, with larger swings than you typically want to see in a clean base. This is an important factor to acknowledge and respect.

Despite that, price has continued to form higher lows, and the stock has held above key moving averages. That tells us demand remains present even though volatility has been elevated.

Potential action area

SEI is showing a breakout buy at $57.31.

Risk management

Because the base is wide, risk management becomes especially important.

A logical stop sits below the most recent higher low, which would signal a failure of the breakout attempt.

LLY - Eli Lilly

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • Exceptional profitability with ~94% return on equity
  • Best-in-class margins for a large-cap pharma
  • RS 88
  • Long-term market leader emerging from a multi-year base

Technical overview

LLY has been consolidating since late November after a powerful advance and is now showing constructive price action within that range.

Price recently found support at the 50-day moving average and has formed a higher low within the consolidation. That is an important development, as it suggests institutions are supporting the stock on pullbacks rather than distributing shares.

The broader structure remains intact, with price holding above key moving averages and tightening after a long 2024–2025 base. This is the type of action you want to see before a potential next leg higher.

Potential action area

LLY is currently in a buy area around $1085, where price is holding above the 50-day moving average and forming a higher low within the consolidation. I generally prefer initiating positions before a clean breakout, when risk can be defined more tightly.

A secondary buy point would be a move back through the upper end of the consolidation, with price reclaiming recent highs.

Risk management

A logical risk reference is a decisive break below the 50-day moving average and the recent higher low at $1006. As long as that level holds, the structure remains intact and the trade thesis is valid.

Summary

LLY is not a fast-moving momentum name, but it is a textbook example of a durable CANSLIM leader. Stocks like this tend to reward patience, especially when they resolve higher after long, controlled consolidations. This is a name that can continue to work over time as long as structure and sponsorship remain intact.

NVT - nVent Electric

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • 91 Relative Strength
  • Exposure to electrical infrastructure and power-related demand
  • Strong price leadership following a long advance

NVT may not be a flashy, headline CANSLIM name, but it consistently checks the boxes that matter: earnings, sales, relative strength, and sustained institutional interest.

Technical overview

After a strong multi-month advance, NVT has been consolidating since November. The consolidation has allowed the moving averages to catch up.

The stock is now trading just below all-time highs and has maintained a constructive structure throughout the consolidation. Price remains above the 50-day moving average, and the range has tightened enough to offer defined risk.

This is the type of action you want to see before the next potential leg higher.

Potential action area

  • Actionable in the current range
  • Additional confirmation on a breakout above $118 (new highs)

Risk management

  • Initial risk reference near $103 (last week’s low)
  • Wider risk option near $93 (consolidation low) for those allowing more room

Summary

NVT is not a high-octane momentum name, but it is a high-quality leader with strong fundamentals and a clean technical setup. It sits in an actionable zone with clearly defined risk, making it a solid watchlist candidate as long as structure remains intact.

This is the type of stock that often continues higher quietly while attention stays elsewhere.

CANSLIM – Leader Just Past Buy Point

FIX – Comfort Systems USA

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Exceptional earnings and sales growth
  • Strong ROE and operating margins
  • Consistently high relative strength (97 RS)
  • Accelerating institutional ownership throughout the bull cycle
  • Proven market leader that has outperformed across multiple market environments

Technical overview

FIX has been one of the most consistent CANSLIM leaders of this entire bull cycle, quietly outperforming while receiving far less attention than many headline names.

On both the daily and weekly charts, the trend remains intact. Price is above rising moving averages, relative strength remains strong, and there has been no meaningful technical damage to structure.

At this point, FIX is past its most recent proper buy point, trading roughly 10 to 15 percent above where risk would have been best defined. I wouldn’t consider this name extended, but is no longer as favorable for new entries.

How to treat this name

FIX is not an actionable buy right now.

It stays on the watchlist as a true market leader and a candidate for future opportunities. Stocks like this are monitored for constructive pullbacks, tight consolidations, or new bases that can reset risk and offer better entry locations.

As long as structure and relative strength remain intact, FIX belongs on the leader board.

APH – Amphenol

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • High return on equity and strong operating margins
  • Increasing institutional ownership
  • 93 Relative Strength
  • Consistent long-term leader within electronic components and connectivity

Technical overview

APH has been in a steady, orderly advance since the April 2025 low, showing exactly the type of tight, persistent price action you want to see in a true market leader.

The stock recently broke out of a consolidation but is now roughly 7 percent above the ideal buy point, similar to names like FIX. That places it just outside a low-risk entry zone for new positions.

Importantly, the character of the advance has been excellent. Pullbacks have been shallow, volatility has remained contained, and price has respected the rising 50-day moving average throughout the trend. This is constructive behavior and confirms ongoing institutional support.

Potential action area

APH is not in a clean buy zone at current levels. The preferred scenarios are:

  • A controlled pullback
  • Tight sideways consolidation that allows price to reset
  • A future breakout from a new, well-defined base

Until one of those occurs, this remains a watchlist name rather than an actionable entry.

Risk management

For those already involved, the 50-day moving average and the most recent higher low serve as logical reference points. A decisive break of those levels would signal a change in character.

Summary

APH is a textbook example of a high-quality leader that moved cleanly out of a base and is now slightly extended. This is not a chase, but it is absolutely a name that should stay on the watchlist.

Stocks like this often reward patience by offering secondary entries through tight consolidations or orderly pullbacks. The goal here is not to force a trade, but to be prepared if and when the next low-risk opportunity appears.

CANSLIM – Pullback Phase

CIEN – Ciena Corp

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth profile
  • 98 Relative Strength
  • Leader within the optical networking / telecom infrastructure space
  • Beneficiary of long-term data traffic and network upgrade demand
  • Clear institutional sponsorship following a powerful multi-month advance

CIEN has been a major leader over the past year, with a sharp and sustained uptrend that reflects both strong fundamentals and institutional demand.

Technical overview

After a sharp run to new highs, CIEN is now pulling back and digesting gains. On the daily, price is moving lower and has not yet shown confirmation that the pullback is complete.

At this stage, the stock is in a decision zone.

It could resolve in one of two ways:

  • Form a higher low and begin turning back up toward the highs
  • Continue correcting deeper after an extended advance

Right now, price has not made a higher high and demand has not clearly reasserted itself. Because of that, this is not an area where I want to be aggressive.

On buying the pullback

Could CIEN be bought using the prior higher low as a stop? Yes, that is a valid strategy for some traders.

However, without a higher high or clear upside confirmation, this setup can fail easily. After such a strong run, failed pullbacks are common.

I prefer to buy on strength, once price confirms that institutions are stepping back in and the next leg higher is underway. That often means accepting slightly wider risk, but it keeps me aligned with momentum rather than guessing during uncertainty.

That trade-off works better for me.

What I’m watching

  • A higher low followed by price starting to move back toward the highs
  • Tightening price action that signals selling pressure is easing
  • Strength returning relative to the market

Until those things occur, CIEN stays firmly in the watch category, not the actionable category.

Bottom line

CIEN is a high-quality leader in a strong theme, but it is currently in a pullback that has not yet resolved. This is a wait-for-confirmation setup. If price confirms strength, it can quickly move back into an actionable zone. If not, patience protects capital.

CLS - Celestica

Why it’s on the watchlist

  • Strong earnings and sales growth
  • High return on equity
  • 96 Relative Strength, placing it among top-performing names in the market
  • Clear leadership within its industry group following a major 2024–2025 advance

Technical overview

CLS had a powerful run from April through November, followed by a consolidation that has taken the form of tightening price action. Within this range, we are seeing higher lows, which is constructive, but also lower highs, creating compression rather than confirmation.

At the moment, price is below the 50-day moving average, which is a key reason this remains a watch rather than an actionable setup. While consolidation after a strong run is normal, the inability to reclaim the 50-day tells us the stock has not yet reasserted upside momentum.

This setup can resolve in either direction. The structure is improving, but price has not yet proven it is ready for the next leg higher.

Potential action area

I am looking for a decisive move back above the 50-day moving average, followed by a push toward all-time highs. A breakout that creates a higher high would signal renewed institutional demand and turn this into a higher-confidence entry.

Tightening on the right side of the chart, combined with strength through resistance, would provide a much cleaner risk/reward opportunity.

Extended Leaders in HOT Industry Groups

Below are strong names in leading industry groups that remain on my radar, but are currently extended or not offering low-risk entries. These are leadership names to watch, not chase, while waiting for proper consolidations or pullbacks.

Computer Data Storage

  • Micron Technology (MU)
  • SanDisk (SNDK)
  • Western Digital (WDC)

Metals and Mining

  • Silver Trust (SLV)
  • Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM)
  • Hecla Mining (HL)
  • Kinross Gold (KGC)

Semiconductors

  • Intel (INTC)
  • Lam Research (LRCX)
  • MACOM Technology Solutions (MTSI)

These are institutional-quality leaders, but most are well past ideal buy points. The focus here is patience and structure, not momentum chasing.

Other Individual Names and Areas on My Radar

  • Alphabet (GOOG) - at buy zone
  • Applied Materials (AMAT) - extended
  • Astera Labs (ALAB) - pulled back, waiting for price confirmation
  • Planet Labs (PL) - pulling back

All four have strong narratives and institutional interest, but price is either extended, choppy, or lacking proper structure.

Beaten-Down Cycle Leaders

These are former leaders with excellent earnings and sales growth, but price action has deteriorated. This is an important distinction.

  • Palantir Technologies (PLTR)
  • NVIDIA (NVDA)
  • Credo Technology Group (CRDO)

The fundamentals remain strong, but price action is no longer aligned. Until these names can rebuild bases, regain key moving averages, and show renewed relative strength, they stay in the “watch only” bucket.

This is a good reminder that great companies are not always great stocks at every point in the cycle.

Relative Strength Breakdown: Top-Down View

When stepping back and analyzing relative strength from the index level down, here’s what stands out:

  • iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) remains the leading index
  • Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) is the hottest sector across 1–6 month timeframes

Strongest Sub-Sectors and ETFs

  • iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX)
  • VanEck Oil Services ETF (OIH)
  • iShares Genomics Immunology and Healthcare ETF (IDNA)
  • SPDR S&P Aerospace & Defense ETF (XAR)
  • SPDR S&P Metals and Mining ETF (XME)
  • SPDR Gold Shares (GLD)
  • iShares Silver Trust (SLV)
  • ETFS Physical Palladium Shares (PAL)
  • Global X Uranium ETF (URA)
  • iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY)
  • iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (EWW)
  • iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ)

This confirms broad-based leadership, not narrow participation. First few years of this bull cycle was few mega leaders driving the indexes, but now we see the opposite. Magnificent 7 not doing as well and the breadth of the market is driving us upwards.

One Important Heads-Up

When I ran a scan for high relative strength across 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year timeframes, combined with quarterly and annual EPS growth above 25%, the result was telling:

All 78 names that passed the scan were in metals and mining.

That does not mean everything there is buyable today, but shows us where the strength has clearly been.

Diving Deeper

In the next few days, I’ll follow this up with detailed watchlists for each of the hottest market areas, like IWM, metals and mining, and aerospace, for those who want to go deeper. I’ll also share a separate watchlist focused on swing trade names that may not check every CANSLIM box but are showing strong volume and price momentum.
